Ratings for first impeachment hearing show healthy interest and a serious partisan divide

New York (CNN Business)On the first day of the televised impeachment hearings against President Trump, the two most popular TV news channels were the two mostly closely associated with political parties. The ratings contradict claims from some of the president’s allies, including one of his sons, Eric Trump, who said on Fox News that “no one was watching it. No one cares.” Clearly lots of people cared enough to tune in. They also wanted to see the spin later in the day — Fox’s Sean Hannity had one of his highest-rated shows of the year, with 4.4 million total viewers. It’s impossible to estimate how many people watched or heard the hearings across all platforms, since television, radio and streaming …

An unflappable Marie Yovanovitch faces down Trump’s taunts

(CNN)Donald Trump has rarely seemed capable of restraining his urges to lash out at women who criticize him, and that dynamic was never more on display than on Friday when he faced down the unflappable Marie Yovanovitch. On the witness stand before the House Intelligence Committee, the poised and dignified 33-year-diplomat described how the color drained from her face as she read the transcript of the President telling another foreign leader she was “bad news” and that “she’s going to go through some things.” Those words, with their ominous tone, were disturbing enough on the page of the transcript, but Yovanovitch brought them to life when she was asked by the Democratic counsel to explain how she interpreted them. “She’s …

The disputes have led to questions of when the deal might be ready to sign. Trump has said he will only agree to a good deal, and is content keeping tariffs …
