You Can Now Watch A Seal Sing The Star Wars Theme Song. Because Science.

Researchers at the University of St Andrews have taught Janice, Zola, and Gandalf, three squidgy gray seals, to sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and the Star Wars theme song – all in the name of science. The team wanted to see whether the seals could copy melodies and the formants in human speech. “Formants are emphasised frequency bands in our speech sounds,” study author Vincent Janik explained to New Scientist. “They are parts of our speech sounds that we modify to encode information. For example, different vowels only differ in their formants.” The researchers monitored the three young seals from birth to determine their natural vocal repertoires. They were then trained to copy sequences of the sounds they naturally make, melodies …

This Enormous Crater Appeared Overnight In Germany

An exploding World War II bomb left a 10-meter-wide (33-foot), 4-meter-deep (13-foot) crater in a German cornfield over the weekend. Last Sunday, Ahlbach residents in central Germany were shaken when a blast the size of a minor earthquake went off at 3.52am local time. No one was injured and while the cause of said blast was at first unknown, there is nothing to suggest it was caused by faulty farm machinery or related tools. Indeed, explosive clearance experts have since said the shape of the hole confirms “with almost absolute certainty” it was produced during a bomb detonation – specifically, a 250-kilogram (550-pound) bomb detonation. Several other unexploded bombs have been found in the vicinity in the past, an area close …

This Is What A (Now Deleted) Military Document Has To Say About US Nuclear Policy

The Pentagon published a document on nuclear warfare (entitled “Nuclear Operations“) earlier this month. It was most probably a mistake because it was swiftly removed from the website – but not before the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) had the chance to archive the paper. The document summarizes the military’s position on nukes, their management, and how and why they might be deployed. It is the first doctrine paper along these lines to be published in the last 14 years and it makes for some alarming reading. “US nuclear forces serve the national objective of maintaining peace through strength,” reads the document. It goes on to say “The spectrum of nuclear warfare may range from tactical application, to limited regional use, to global employment …

A ‘Museum of Weed’ is coming to Hollywood

San Francisco (CNN Business)A 30,000-square-foot cannabis museum is coming to Hollywood. “Frankly, it feels like we’re at an inflection point … where the outcome isn’t fully decided,” Beals said. The exhibits also delve into the minutiae of the cannabis plant via an “interactive Plant Lab.” It won’t be fully interactive, though. No consumption of cannabis nor its various components — including the super-trendy cannabis compound CBD — are allowed. To strike a balance between the Snapchattable and the somber, the company drew from an eclectic mix of existing repositories, such as the Museum of Ice Cream in San Francisco and more culturally specific museums such as those dedicated to civil rights movements. Weedmaps’ multimillion-dollar venture has been more than a …

‘Batman’ turns 30: How a superfan got Hollywood to redefine the Dark Knight

(CNN)Three decades after director Tim Burton’s 1989 “Batman” film became a box office blockbuster and pop culture phenomenon, the decision to bring the Dark Knight to the big screen seems like it should have been a no-brainer. But in the years leading up to the film’s release, it was as hard to breach the barriers to Hollywood as it was to break into the Batcave.

Waymo Goes Global With Renault-Nissan Partnership

Waymo has signed an agreement to work with Renault and Nissan on issues surrounding self-driving car technology, the companies said Thursday. The partnership, which the companies call a “first step,” doesn’t currently include immediate plans to launch Waymo self-driving vehicles in France or Japan. Instead, the companies will work together to “research commercial, legal and regulatory issues related to driverless transportation-as-a-service offerings in France and Japan,” according to a joint press release. What exactly does that mean? Clearly, Waymo brings the tech expertise, and Renault and Nissan bring the manufacturing know-how, plus some insider knowledge about local laws and politics. Both want to figure out how to one day turn autonomous vehicles into a viable, money-making business. But like most …

Astronomers Looked For Alien Civilization In Our Closest 1,300 Stars. Here’s What They Found

The truth is out there, they say, but we haven’t come close to finding it yet. The Breakthrough Listen project has searched the closest 1,327 stars in our galaxy for hints of intelligent life and advanced civilizations. So far, it sounds mighty quiet out there. The project is yet to come across any signals that suggest our cosmic neighborhood is home to any advanced civilization other than our own. Still, the team is not losing hope. “We scoured thousands of hours of observations of nearby stars, across billions of frequency channels. We found no evidence of artificial signals from beyond Earth, but this doesn’t mean there isn’t intelligent life out there: we may just not have looked in the right place yet, …

Becca Blackwell Is A Natural Disruptor

Hurricane Diane” In the play, Blackwell is Dionysus, coming out of hiding because he realizes the earth is being destroyed. “If I don’t step in now there will be no humans left on Earth to worship me … It’s time for a comeback!” He lands in a Jersey suburb, takes the form of a butch lesbian landscaper named Diane and tries to reboot his Bacchanalia by enthralling four married, bored, upper-middle-class women. “It’s a crazy role because I have to come out and be a demigod, but then, like most butches, I end up doing a lot of the listening,” Blackwell says. “So to make that happen, I have to come out really strong right at the start.” George wrote …
