Thirty years on, the Tiananmen Square image that shocked the world

Photographer Jeff Widener explains how a series of mishaps meant it was almost the picture that got away A solitary figure in a white shirt and black trousers clutches a bag and stands in front of a column of halted tanks, a cluster of street lights floating to one side like balloons. The mans shoulders are rounded, Time magazines 100 most influential of all time that has become the most famous. Every Tank Man photo has a different flavour. I think I was lucky I was using such a fine-grained film. It allowed it to be blown up larger. I think mine also has a more Gandhi feel. He looks more vulnerable: a common man asking a question, like: why …

Fresh faces on stage at the TV industry’s upfronts this week

New York (CNN Business)A version of this article first appeared in the “Reliable Sources” newsletter. You can sign up for free right here. Brian Lowry emails: NBC’s three-year renewal of “This is Us” was one of the highlights of the network’s upfront announcement on Sunday, in advance of the formal presentation at Radio City on Monday. NBC called the deal “unprecedented” — which it isn’t, as anyone who remembers “Lost” can attest — but it IS emblematic of what’s become a play-it-safe approach, where stability is prized above all… >> NBC Entertainment co-chair George Cheeks, meanwhile, seemed to acknowledge the somewhat diminished role the broadcasters will occupy this week during a conference call, noting that there would be much discussion …

HBO Fixes That Coffee Cup Mistake, Fans React With Even More Memes

Despite the hard work and attention to detail the production designers and their crew put into each episode, it seems someone didn’t have their coffee that day and left the unapproved prop laying in front of Emilia Clarke. After a flood of memes and critiques by the fans HBO responded with a written statement. However, viewers were relentless so they took some digital steps. Yet Another ‘Game Of Thrones’ Mainstay Has Died

Shame. She was wrong. Authorities said Cersei fell victim to her enemy’s own cruelty, finding herself in the Red Keep as it crumbled around her and took out much of her guard. When her loyal Hand-slash-co-conspirator Qyburn met a poetic fate at the hand of the reanimated Mountain, a monster of his own making, all seemed lost until she stumbled into her twin brother, Jaime. Reports indicate the Queen’s last words betrayed an inner cowardice: “Please don’t let me die. I don’t want to die.” Her brother reportedly held his sister, repeating a familiar sentiment, that the two of them were the only ones who mattered.  HBO Cersei Lannister is now no longer.  She was rumored to have given birth …

Melinda Gates Wants Tech to Wake Up to Women’s Empowerment

For almost 20 years, Melinda Gates has been on a mission to make the world better. When she and her husband launched the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000, they knew only that they wanted to use their Microsoft wealth to stop children born in poverty from needlessly dying of ailments that were easily cured in developed nations. Since then, their mandate has evolved to include curing disease, developing and delivering new medications, lifting communities out of poverty, and increasing access to opportunity and education. A few years ago, Gates realized one thing unified all those goals: empowering women. She is not alone. Experts working on the world’s biggest problems agree that by helping women, you help everyone. Artificial Intelligence May Not ‘Hallucinate’ After All

Thanks to advances in machine learning, computers have gotten really good at identifying what’s in photographs. They started beating humans at the task years ago, and can now even generate fake images that look eerily real. While the technology has come a long way, it’s still not entirely foolproof. In particular, researchers have found that image detection algorithms remain susceptible to a class of problems called adversarial examples. Adversarial examples are like optical (or audio) illusions for AI. By altering a handful of pixels, a computer scientist can fool a machine learning classifier into thinking, say, a picture of a rifle is actually one of a helicopter. But to you or me, the image still would look like a gun—it …
