Judge Throws Out Ex-Penn State President’s Conviction

The decision by U.S. Magistrate Judge Karoline Mehalchick in Scranton, Pennsylvania, gave state prosecutors three months to retry Spanier under the state’s 1995 child endangerment law, the version in place in 2001. Mehalchick agreed with Spanier that he was improperly charged under a 2007 law for actions that occurred in 2001, when he was responding to a complaint about former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky showering with a boy on campus. Spanier had been due to report to jail early Wednesday to begin serving a minimum sentence of two months. Spanier’s lawyers argued that the application of the law to acts that occurred years before the measure was passed violated the U.S. Constitution. Spanier was convicted for how he and …

Donald Glover, Adidas, Nike, and the Fight for Cool

Recently, in a group chat, I expressed excitement over an unlikely piece of work: a new short film from Adidas. The sportswear corporation, which now also counts Beyoncé as a "creative partner," had teamed up with Donald Glover to make a series of vignettes featuring him and the actress Mo'Nique trading comic tête-à-têtes. Directed by longtime collaborator Ibra Ake, the film embodies Glover's typical patchwork: It's wonky, narratively indeterminate, and crammed with wit and the occasional inside joke. It’s World Immunization Week and the world’s first malaria vaccine has just begun an exciting new pilot program in Malawi. However, putting a downer on this good news, a new analysis by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that the measles vaccine, which was invented in 1963, still isn’t reaching enough people thanks to flawed medical systems, limited health care access, and the rising tide of anti-vaxxers.    The result: Measles is making a rapid comeback, with 110,000 cases so far in 2019, a 300 percent increase on the same period last year. The data shows that across the globe, 169 million children didn’t receive the first dose of the measles vaccine between 2010 and 2017. That’s 21.1 million …

Adidas is making a shoe that never has to be thrown away.

What do you do when the running shoes you wear every day have given up? If you’re like most of us, you first consider the cost of a new shoe — very important — and then toss your old shoes into the garbage. But maybe you also wonder, as I have done many times, whether shoes belong in the garbage or whether they should be recycled. Who knows though? They’re made of so many different materials. And if they can be recycled, all you can really do is hope that the plastic gets recycled correctly and doesn’t end up in the ocean. Unfortunately, as TreeHugger points out, recycling is “a mess.” And despite best intentions, plastic, which is basically indestructible …
