Congress seeks new ways to prevent shutdowns from happening

Washington (CNN)As the country recovers from the longest government shutdown in United States history, Democratic and Republican lawmakers alike are saying they don’t want a shutdown to happen again. Some are even pushing legislative proposals aimed at preventing the gears of government from grinding to a halt in the future. The threat of a shutdown is currently a deterrent that’s supposed to encourage lawmakers to work together to pass needed, annual spending bills on time to fund the federal government. Some of the proposals that have been introduced in Congress to avert shutdowns would automatically renew funding at existing levels through the implementation of stopgap spending legislation, but would pair that with measures intended to bring lawmakers to the table …

ER doctor shares why social media is a powerful tool in helping him cope with death.

via Texas Military Department / Flickr Telling someone their child has just died has to be one of the most difficult things a human can do. For an emergency room physician, it’s part of their day-to-day lives. Every day there’s a chance they’ll deliver horrifying news that will forever change someone’s life. It’s not a responsibility to be taken lightly. But it’s understandable that an emergency room physician would become calloused after years of delivering tragic news. The physician may also be enraged after seeing another lifeless body of a young person who died due to drugs or carelessness. Chicago Is So Cold Right Now That People Are Reporting Signs Of Frost Quakes

Several people in the Chicago area have reported hearing loud booms in the last couple of days, and given the sudden and extreme drop in temperatures due to the polar vortex, people have started suggesting that the cause of the noise and tremors might be “frost quakes”. Frost quakes, also known as cryoseisms or ice quakes, only happen when several conditions are met. This makes them both difficult to predict and difficult to confirm once they have happened. According to a recent study, for a frost quake to occur you need four things. The region needs to be susceptible to sudden drops in temperature. The ground needs to be soaked in water and also have very little snow cover. And most …

Hold UpThe Official Fyre Festival IG Is Back Up And Running Betches

Maybe 2019 won’t be a terrible year after all, because this Fyre Festival content just keeps on coming. In the battle of the two dueling Fyre documentaries, one of the most interesting aspects was the role of Fuck Jerry, and who was truly responsible for the fiasco. In the Hulu documentary, one of the main interview subjects was Oren Aks, who worked for Jerry Media to help market the festival. Oren no longer works there, and the movie ended with him giving Jerry Media the middle finger, in case you were wondering where that professional relationship ended up. Well, it doesn’t look like Oren and Fuck Jerry will be patching things up any time soon, because Oren is stirring up …

Nevada just made history by putting women in charge of its government.

Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images Nevada and Colorado have made U.S. history, opening their state legislative sessions with female majorities. Women make up 50.8% of the American population, so it only seems logical that women would make up approximately half of our elected representatives. However, only 25.3% of state legislative seats in 2018 were held by women. With the November midterm elections, that percentage increased to 28.5%—still abysmally shy of half. Enter Nevada and Colorado, two shining beacons of hope for women in government. As of Monday, Nevada became the first state legislature with a female majority, with approximately 51% of state representatives and senators combined being women. And Colorado became only the second state ever to have at least …

Prosecutors lay out volume of evidence collected from Roger Stone’s hard drives, email accounts

Washington (CNN)Information the Justice Department collected from Roger Stone’s iCloud accounts and email accounts and on computer hardware spans “several years,” special counsel Robert Mueller said Thursday. Mueller wants to place a protective order that would lock down the confidentiality of evidence collected against Stone, as the prosecutors begin sharing the documents with his legal team. DC US Attorney Jessie Liu wrote in the filing. Orders like these are fairly typical in high-profile cases and are meant to prevent leaks of documents in the case. The prosecutors also hope the judge will agree that the amount of evidence in this case should allow for more time before a trial Stone is scheduled to appear Friday afternoon before DC District Judge …

Trump said he has not thought about pardon for Roger Stone

(CNN)President Donald Trump said he has not thought about pardoning his longtime ally and adviser Roger Stone and sought to distance Stone from his 2016 presidential campaign. Stone was indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller’s grand jury on charges of obstruction, false statements and witness tampering. The indictment alleged that Stone sought stolen emails from WikiLeaks during the 2016 campaign and coordinated his outreach with top Trump campaign officials. Stone pleaded not guilty to the charges last week. Trump told The New York Times in a recent interview that he had “never” spoken with Stone about WikiLeaks. As for the special counsel investigation, the President once again lamented that the Russia probe is a “total witch hunt” and insisted that …

Pandas Used To Eat Meat, Then Went Vegetarian, But Now Just Eat Bamboo

Pandas spend their days lazing around the mountains of China, giving conservationists sleepness nights, and munching down on a diet of essentially just bamboo shoots. However, these chilled-out bears were not always so fussy with their food.   Up to 99 percent of the giant panda’s diet is made up of bamboo, but this is a relatively recent development in their evolutionary history. According to a new study, pandas actually had a much more varied diet until just a few thousand years ago.  Ancient ancestors of the panda were actually carnivorous, just as you’d expect from a bear. Even modern pandas still have the digestive system of a carnivore and can, occasionally, eat meat. This new research shows that pandas did …

Democratic anxieties over ‘Medicare for all’ kick off first 2020 primary fight

(CNN)The fight to preserve Obamacare kept ambitious Democrats in near lockstep during the first two years of Donald Trump’s presidency. But as the party begins the process of selecting a 2020 nominee, the future of health care in America has emerged as an early flashpoint. The other 2020 contenders have offered more nuanced — or muddled, depending on how you view it — takes on the issue. Though there remains broad agreement among them that health care is a human right — one that the government should guarantee, even if only as a last resort — questions over how to get there have yielded a variety of answers. Sen. Kamala Harris at a CNN town hall a week ago said …

This man’s encounter with border patrol should have us all brushing up on our legal rights.

A comedian traveling by bus in Washington state shared his not-so-funny, Gestapo-esque encounter with U.S. border patrol agents. Mohanad Elshieky is a stand-up comedian originally from Benghazi, Libya (yes, that Benghazi) but is living in Portland Oregon. Elshieky told  Willamette Week that he was officially granted political asylum in the U.S. in October 2018, which makes him a legal resident of the United States. However, that status appeared to not matter to the immigration officials who allegedly boarded the bus Elshieky was on this weekend. “This morning,” Elshieky wrote on Twitter, “ICE agents got on my Greyhound bus that was headed from Spokane to Portland. They walked around before they asked me and few others to step outside and took …

Debunking the utter idiocy of Donald Trump’s global warming tweet

(CNN)On Monday night, President Donald Trump tweeted this: “In the beautiful Midwest, windchill temperatures are reaching minus 60 degrees, the coldest ever recorded. In coming days, expected to get even colder. People can’t last outside even for minutes. What the hell is going on with Global Waming? Please come back fast, we need you!” Cillizza: Let’s start simple: Does cold weather for a few days — or even a few months — negate global warming? Samenow: Absolutely not. Global warming refers to the trend in rising temperatures over decades. Punishing cold snaps are still expected in a warming world, just fewer of them. And their intensity should tend to ease some over time — but they won’t ever entirely disappear. …
