Parties clash during TV election debate

Earlier in December, DUP leader Arlene Foster said her colleague Jim Wells had been Stormont’s health minister when the initial decision was taken to alter pay levels from those in Great Britain, citing financial challenges at the time. Mrs Little-Pengelly said the only way to resolve the matter was to restore power-sharing immediately. But Sinn Féin’s Stormont leader Michelle O’Neill, also a former health minister, said the decision to break parity was solely taken by the DUP and that people should be angry at the Conservatives for pursuing austerity policies in the first place. Ulster Unionist leader Steve Aiken said an “emergency” had developed in health care and he has asked the Northern Ireland Secretary Julian Smith to intervene further …

Hard Rock Hotel collapse reminds New Orleans of undocumented workers’ plight

An undocumented workforce rebuilt the city after Hurricane Katrina. Nearly a decade and a half later, they remain unrecognized The sight of the collapsed Hard Rock Hotel is impossible to escape on the busy Canal Street corridor downtown. Slabs of broken gray concrete form a frozen landslide 18 stories above the ground, and the arm of a massive crane stands almost upright after a botched removal effort left it embedded in the sidewalk below. Nearly three months after the deadly collapse, the bodies of two victims Jos Ponce Arreola, from Mexico, and Quinnyon Wimberly, from New Orleans still remain inside the wreckage. After Delmer Joel Ramrez Palma 2006 academic study found about half of the reconstruction workforce was Latinx, and …

Austria struggles with marauding Krampus demons gone rogue

Police record rising violence and drunkenness in relation to traditional folkloric festivities Goat-horned half-demons with scraggy coats of fur, lolling tongues and threatening bundles of birch branches are no ones idea of a welcome guest on a winters night. In Austria, however, the figure of the Krampus has been part of pre-Christmas folklore for centuries, with men in costumes roaming the streets to scare children and grownups from the end of November to the middle of December. Yet in recent years the Krampus has developed to become an altogether very modern bogeyman, with a rising number of complaints about the demons acting in a drunkenly and disorderly fashion once they have donned their fearsome masks. In Carinthia, police recorded a …

Alexandra Hall Hall, the Brexit envoy for the United Kingdom in Washington, has resigned. (gov.uk) “I have been increasingly dismayed by the way in which our political leaders have tried to deliver Brexit, with reluctance to address honestly, even with our own citizens, the challenges and trade-offs which Brexit involves; the use of misleading or disingenuous arguments about the implications of the various options before us; and some behavior towards our institutions, which, were it happening in another country, we would almost certainly as diplomats have received instructions to register our concern,” she wrote in the letter. Today, I’m calling for a full review of the U.S. military programs to train foreign nationals on American soil. We shouldn’t be providing …

Porsche’s first electric car is pricey but insanely fun

Wrightwood, California (CNN Business)Just in case you were worried electric cars were going to be boring, Porsche made the Taycan. It isn’t perfect and, yes, it is expensive, but it is absolutely not boring. With that added length, the batteries can be low down in the car’s floor, giving it the lowest possible center of gravity. Batteries do add considerable mass, of course, so the Taycan weighs over 1,200 pounds more than the 911 Turbo. The Taycan handles its heft marvelously, though. It doesn’t feel like a gasoline-Porsche, but that is not a bad thing. In normal driving — when you’re not using the car’s hard-accelerating “Launch Mode” — its motors produce an ample 617 horsepower. The steering and brakes …
