(CNN)Holly Nunn is expecting her first baby in September, so it was with a bright pink shirt and a protruding belly that she joined an abortion rights rally outside the US Supreme Court on Tuesday. “My voice, my choice,” protesters outside the Georgia state Capitol in Atlanta shouted. More than 50 organizations — including the American Civil Liberties Union and NARAL Pro-Choice America — are participating in #StopTheBans protests nationwide. Rallies began taking place at noon local time in almost all 50 states. “Across the country, we are seeing a new wave of extreme bans on abortion, stripping away reproductive freedom and representing an all-out assault on abortion access,” organizers said. “This is Trump’s anti-choice movement… and it’s terrifying, particularly …

From Astrology And Angels To Witchcraft: Medical Practice In Elizabethan England Was Just As Mad As It Sounds

The popularity of celebrity doctors like Dr Phil or Dr Christian of Embarrassing Bodies fame is nothing new. Simon Forman and Richard Napier were the 17th-century equivalents, prescribing ointments and other “cures” to the folk of Elizabethan England. A decade-long project at the University of Cambridge is seeing some of their patient records digitalized – and the result is a fantastical insight into the medical world of the pre-industrial era. A time prior to Alexander Fleming and the discovery of penicillin in 1928, or Edward Jenner and the invention of the first successful vaccine (for smallpox) in 1798. Before the use of antibiotics and vaccines became widespread, astrology, magic, and religion were the cornerstones of medicine. As the records show, Forman …

Trump issues order to ban foreign telecom gear that poses security risk

Washington, DC (CNN Business)President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday barring US firms from using telecom gear from sources the administration deems national security threats. The executive order — along with Huawei’s addition to the list — comes as Trump is seeking to apply additional pressure on China in trade talks, with stiffer tariffs affecting billions of dollars of goods. Senior administration officials told reporters that the document reflects Trump’s commitment to keeping the nation’s networks secure from foreign adversaries. And other US officials have openly lobbied allies not to use Huawei gear, arguing that the company’s products could offer the Chinese government a way to spy on sensitive US communications. The Trump administration will develop more specific …

In Economic Terms, Alabama Was Already A Terrible Place For Women

Even before Alabama’s overwhelmingly male-dominated legislature abortions, the state was already a fairly terrible place for women ― especially women of color ― and mothers in particular. Alabama is one of only two states with no equal pay laws protecting women from discrimination (the other is Mississippi). It has the fourth largest pay gap in the U.S., according to the National Partnership for Women & Families. Women working there full-time earn, on average, just 73 cents for every dollar a man makes, compared with the U.S. average of 80 cents on the dollar. For black women it’s 58 cents, versus 61 cents nationwide. Many Alabama women don’t work full time because they can’t afford, or lack access to, quality child …

Trump eyes Biden as he ramps up reelection bid with Pennsylvania rally

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump kicked off his hangar rally Monday in Montoursville, Pennsylvania, touting economic growth under his administration. He predicted that it should be “very easy” to debate the eventual 2020 Democratic nominee because of his economic successes. The President’s challenges in Rust Belt states, critical to his narrow 2016 victory, are at the forefront of advisers’ minds. Polling conducted by the Trump campaign last month confirmed cracks in his support in Pennsylvania and Michigan, reinforcing warnings from the 2018 midterms, when Democrats took back the House. Trump hopes rallies will be part of the solution to shoring up his support. Frustrated by the increasing amount of TV news coverage the Democratic presidential candidates are attracting, Trump is looking …

As he has in other states, Biden cast himself as the experienced statesman best equipped to defeat President Donald Trump, restore the country’s “basic bargain” of economic fairness and heal the country’s divisions. I feel like the country is broken right now. And we need somebody who can win and then heal it. Mindy Musumeci Friday story in Reuters in which his advisers discussed his plans to seek a “middle ground” on climate change. Areas Surrounding The Notre Dame Are Now Saturated With Unsafe Levels Of Lead

The areas closest to the recently burned Notre Dame are closed due to unsafe levels of lead contamination reaching between 32 and 65 times the limit recommended by French health authorities of 0.3 grams per kilogram, reports the Associated Press. France banned the use of lead in paints in 1948 but the 12th-century cathedral’s roof and infrastructure largely consisted of the toxic chemical element. The roof of the cathedral melted, releasing high levels of lead that may have made its way to the outside plaza, homes, buildings, and adjacent roads. Additionally, hundreds of tons of lead were used in the construction of the cathedral’s frame and the church spire that collapsed during the fire, the Weather Channel reports. Two weeks following the …
