Knife crime offenders to wear GPS tracking tags

London (CNN)Knife crime offenders in London will be tagged with GPS tracking devices after leaving prison, the city’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, said Monday, as the UK capital attempts to curb the growing problem of violent crime on its streets. In February 2018, London’s monthly homicide rate briefly overtook New York’s for the first time in modern history, and homicides in London rose 14% in the 12 months to September 2018 — the latest period for which statistics are available — according to UK’s Office for National Statistics. “This innovative pilot will build on the good work of the City Hall-funded violent crime task force by helping offenders integrate back into society and reducing the risk of reoffending, as well as …

Cory Booker Woos Iowans With Love-Heavy Brand Of Progressive Patriotism

WATERLOO, Iowa ― New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker’s favorite presidential campaign-trail yarn ― and he has a lot of them ― is about how his parents, two of IBM’s first black executives, overcame housing market discrimination to raise him and his brother in a predominantly white neighborhood in one of his state’s suburbs. Recounting the tale Friday afternoon to an audience of about 100 Democrats at a community college in Waterloo, Booker marveled at the far-reaching power of individual political sacrifices. It’s a testament, he declared with excitement in his voice, to his deeply held belief that “love is a radical force.” On the same weekend that Sen. (D-Mass.) officially with a pledge to “fight back” against the waged by …

Researchers May Have Found A Link Between Depression And Gut Bacteria

Depression and quality of life appear to be associated with certain species of bacteria found in the human gut, according to a new study by Belgian researchers. The authors found that two groups of bacteria, Coprococcus and Dialister, were depleted in people suffering from depression. The findings are reported in Nature Microbiology. The research team found this correlation by combining the fecal microbiome data of 1,054 individuals enrolled in the Flemish Gut Flora Project with their mental health diagnoses. They then validated the finding by studying an independent group of 1,063 people from the Dutch LifeLinesDEEP cohort and a group of clinically depressed patients at the University Hospitals Leuven. “The relationship between gut microbial metabolism and mental health is a controversial topic in microbiome …

5 things to know for February 8: Politics, abortion law, Jeff Bezos, Frank Robinson

(CNN)If you’re thinking about doing the boiling water challenge, here’s a word of advice: Just don’t. It’s sending people to the hospital. 1. Politics Longest-serving congressman in US history dies at 92 2. Louisiana abortion law The Supreme Court voted 5-4 to block a Louisiana abortion access law that was set to go into effect today. The state’s Unsafe Abortion Protection Act requires a doctor have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the facility where the abortion is performed. Critics said there’s no medical justification for the law and it was just an attempt to restrict abortions. The ruling doesn’t stop the Supremes from taking up the case later, though, and possibly upholding the law. Chief Justice John Roberts …

Turns out almost everyone loved that ‘controversial’ Gillette ad about toxic masculinity.

(Ad photo via Procter & Gamble Co.) The social media outrage index isn’t a very accurate way judging how everyday Americans feel about events in the news. Social media platforms, like Twitter and Facebook, are great places for the most closed-minded, opinionated, thin-skinned, and angriest among us to vent their frustrations. But, while those people are foaming at the mouth, most people are going about their day, worrying about making ends meet and thinking about how to care for their families and friends. They’re probably happier, too. If you were on Twitter in the weeks before the Super Bowl you probably would have thought conservatives everywhere were irate over the “controversial” Gillette “Best Men Can Be” advertisement. The nearly two-minute …
