“Just look at what is now being exposed in our Department of Justice and the FBI. Look at what’s going on. You have some real bad ones. You see what’s happening at the FBI — they’re all gone, they’re all gone, they’re all gone,” he said.
“But there’s a lingering stench, and we’re going to get rid of that, too,” he added.
Trump’s comments at a stop in Springfield where he backed GOP Senate candidate Josh Hawley came in the wake of a Friday New York Times article citing unnamed sources that said Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein suggested last year secretly recording Trump. He also talked about recruiting Cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment to oust Trump as unfit for office, according to the Times. Rosenstein called the story “inaccurate and factually incorrect.” An insider source who requested anonymity told HuffPost that Rosenstein was being sarcastic and that he never intended to record the president.
In response to the report, a surprising source urged Trump not to fire anyone: Fox News host Sean Hannity. Hannity warned the president on his program Friday that this was a “set up.” Trump “needs not to fall into a trap,” said Hannity.
“I have a message for the president tonight: Under zero circumstances should the president fire anybody,” said Hannity. “They are hoping and praying that the president does just that. They’re hoping he gets mad, that he gets sick and tired of it,” and then they’ll turn it into a political scandal, he added.
Hannity claimed the Rosenstein story is part of a “coup” by an anti-Trump “deep state” within the government, referencing a conspiracy theory. The news host also said that the “deep state” is “crumbling from within at this very hour.”
In other comments in his speech, Trump hailed his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman, as a “fantastic man” from “central casting.” Women are “for him more than anyone would understand,” Trump added.
